Webjaw Games

Welcome to Webjaw Games.  We have a small group that meets irregularly to play all sorts of games.  If you are in the Marinwood/San Rafael area and are interested in meeting us, please drop us an email.  We usually play once or twice a month on a Saturday afternoon/evening.

 Games List

Antike Sort of a combo of Civ and Risk, an interesting game.  I've played it a couple of times, and it sort of breaks down towards the end game when points become few and hard to get.
Attika Played once and was kinda fun, but I have no real grasp on the game.
Samurai Another Knizia -- sort of an area control game.  Needs more play.
Lost Cities Two player Knizia game with a few varied strategies, although it seems whoever gets lucky and draws the most high cards tends to win.
No Thanks! Fun and easy card game -- lots of a luck, but a little skill.  Plays nice and fast.
San Marco It's good to be the Doge!  We've played this a few times, but it's still hard to figure out the exact worth of the Solomon-esque piles.
Hare und Tortoise Got it at a fire sale, and it actually is kind of fun -- should be a good one with Lewis in about 5 years.
Queens Necklace Got it at a fire sale, but it looks somewhat confusing, but we'll give it a try.
Fist of Dragonstones Got it at a fire sale, but looks okay, but am waiting for a a day when we have a few more players over.
New England Picked this up at KublaCon but haven't gotten a chance to play, as everyone says 4 players are really needed.
Gulo Gulo and Chicken Cha Cha I picked up a couple of Euro-kids games to bone up on them for when our son is ready.  Gulo Gulo isn't half bad, and has a physical mechanic that favors kids with their small fingers.

Prophecy

This is in the Talisman/Runebound category, and is probably the best of the three (in terms of playability and length)
Tower of Babel Still waiting to be played.
Robber Knights This is kind of an Othello knockoff with tiles.  We've played three 3-player games, and have gotten it down fairly well.  Would like to try with the full 4 players one of these days.
New England Still waiting to try this out -- everyone says it really plays best with 4.

Caylus

Played this a bunch, really fun game, but definitely hardcore.  I've mastered the basic strategy, but the endgame is still beyond me.

Amun-Re

We got to play this the other weekend with 4.  As we were learning this we didn't get too much into strategy, but we still had fun.  The basic lesson learned with Amun-Re is all powerful!  Sacrifice!

Winner:  Denise

Another game that seems to play best with 5.

Cosmic Encounter

Mayfair w/ More Cosmic
Also have incomplete (but playable) EON

Puerto Rico

I've been reading up on strategy (how specifically to beat the first corn+shipping syndrome), but I still have to teach Denise to play and I'm hoping to get a a session in soon.

HeroScape

We've been having fun with this, going through some of the initial scenarios.  Quyen and I traded wins at the Giant's Table -- First time he overwhelmed me with Scotts and Alistair MacDirk, but in the rematch I went for more ranged units and was able to did better.

Tim and I did the only scenario Escape from Wolf Road and it came down to a coin flip.  he had escaped one hero, I had offed another, and his last character was McDirk in his starting zone.  Of course with the double turn ability and road movement, he could cross the entire board in just 2 turns.  Tim timed it so as that he would do the first move at the end of  one turn, and the remaining at the start of the next.  I sniped him all the way down the road, but was unable to get anyone in front of him.  He got initiative on the 2nd turn, and too 1 pt from disengaging and made it off the board with 1 life left.

Alhambra

This is one of our all around favorites, as it's fast, simple, and has a few different strategies.  We don't have any of the expansions (they seem to just clutter the game), but we do use the Vizier Rule from the first expansion.  I will probably get the next expansion, City Gates, as it has a couple of mechanics that actually look interesting.

Ticket To Ride:  Europe

One of Denise's favorites as it reminds her of her trip to Europe the summer after she graduated high school (see the movie EuroTrip for reference).

Denise has beat us 2 and 0, but next time we'll take her down!

Power Grid

English Revised  Just picked up the expansion map, but we haven't tried it.

We are still working out the strategy to this one.  It's sort of a lose-to-win game where as you want to be in last place (and therefore tack your actions at the best time) until you make your bid for the win.

Lowenherz

Rio Grande English.

This was one of the first "eurogames" I played (back in the 90s) and I still think it's quite good for a positional game (and generally more interesting than say Tigris & Euphrates)

Citadels

Includes Dark City expansion

Quyen for the sneaky win!  He is the Warlord!

Carcassonne

Includes Inns & Cathedrals, River, River 2, Count, Traders & Builders and King and Scout

Quyen spanked me in a quick basic-set duel.  I always overextend with my Meeples and miss out on scoring opportunities (although he got real lucky in his city capping draws).  He also Jedi-Mind-Tricked me out of the big farm!

Bang!

Includes Dodge City and Fistfull of Cards

We got in 2 four-player games of this -- boy, is it a silly fun game.  I'm looking forward to this one at KublaCon with a full-complement.

Through the Desert

Pastel Camels!
This is the first game we've really not been impressed with -- sure, the mechanics seem solid, but the implementation is cumbersome -- too many small camels and riders, and the colors make the game very difficult to keep track of.

Elasund

Winner 1:  Denise

This has been a very interesting game for us.  It plays fast, and has lots of tactical decisions on how to interact with your opponents.  We got in 2 three-player games, with Tim taking the first, and Quyen sneaking a win after we ganged up on a strong Tim in the last game.

Tigris & Euphrates

Winner 1:  Quyen

I've dueled both Tim and Denise, crushing both with my Temples.  We still don't have this down, and it's not quite grabbing us as well as you'd think such a high-rated game would.

Ra

Winner 1:  John

Ra Ra Ra!  Turning into another favorite -- we've played this several more times, with winners all around.

Runebound

Winner 1:  Tim

We started a second game, but it was kinda late at night, and we decided to Zzzz instead.  Going down in our rating scale (maybe it's not the next Talisman).

Modern Art

More Knizia -- a very straight forward game, but plays quick and fun.

We got in 2 four-player games, with Denise winning both with interesting strategies.  Our first game was a learning game, and she won by not winning a lot of auctions, and putting up several double auctions.  The second game she was to me immediate left, and I made some crucial pricing errors on fixed price auctions, allowing her to score big time.

Settlers of Catan

Includes 5-6 player expansion

Not my favorite, but it's one of the most accessible of the eurogames.

Dungeon Twister

Includes Paladins & Dragons

Winner 1:  Tim

Tim beat on my with some serious Troll action (he scooped up my fireball want).

Shadows over Camelot

Knights:  3
Traitor:  3
Forces of Evil:  3

Must save Camelot!

Elfenland

Just got this, gonna have to try it out.  From what I've read, best with 5 or 6 players, which we rarely have.

Titan: The Arena

Avalon Hill edition

Winner 1: Denise

Nuclear War

Includes Nuclear Escalation and booster cards

Illuminati

Includes Y2K.  Fnord!

We played this three-player the other day, with a most unfortunate match up.  Quyen was the UFOs, but was obviously Cthulhu.  He opted for destroying groups over strengthen his power structure, and we took him out by neutralizing his two base groups.  That left me as the Assassins vs. Tim's Church of the Sub-Genius -- bad match up -- I spend all my MB neutralizing him, he gains MBs...

Risk

Wooden Pieces!

Diplomacy

Wooden Pieces!  I love this game, but it's so hard to find the time and the players.

The Inventors

A board game from my youth, it's still kinda fun.  We played this a New Year's Eve a few years go.

Rollercoaster Tycoon

Winner 1: Denise

Supremacy

Includes Field Marshal's Handbook and more

Munchkin

Stupid stupid game.  Got all 4 expansions, too.

Masterpiece

A board game from my youth, it's still kinda fun.  We played this a New Year's Eve a few years go.

Castle Risk

Crazy Risk that's generally broken.  Go ship go!

Talisman 3rd Ed.

sigh... 3rd edition no expansions...

Risk Clone Wars

Picked this up for $1 at the B&N clearance sale.  Not sure if it's worth it!

Eurorails

Crayons!

RoboRally

Got the Wizards of the Coast edition, with an expansion or two.

Never one of my favorites, but I should dust it off every now and then.
